Learning Dependence

Based on Psalm 44

As Israel was given the promised land by the power of God, even so today God shows his power through his weak chosen instruments. Yet his people suffer greatly in order that they may learn to depend continuously on God, so his glory will not be stolen by them.

In this prayer David first reminds himself of how God has worked in history and his own experience.
It is clear from this Psalm that suffering can happen to good people without being punishment and the only response is to turn to God.

God is faithful in keeping his faithful people acquainted with the reality of his power and their impotence, so they will trust him in all things and thus find ultimate deliverance.

God has showed his power to me, bringing greater opportunities to replace those that were lost. I must continue to trust in him and not turn to my own ability. I can do this by continuing to meditate on his word.
